Why do a Serial Dilution?
So we can use the fete story to talk about standard curves. The undiluted juice which is in a lab situation the top standard was far too strong and needed diluting, and the most dilute was too weak, yet there is a range of dilutions which were tasty and palatable. This is the same for our experiments; we need to choose a dilution which is relevant which is like choosing the best juice dilution for taste.
Often the standard which is given to you in the lab is far to strong for the experiment and it needs to be diluted. But equally the equipment has a detection limit so we can’t dilute it to much, or if it is to dilute the experiment might not work.
The most important thing is not to panic. You do serial dilutions in your everyday life all the time. An example is the orange juice story, making tea. A serial dilution is simply making more and more dilutions in a step-wise manner. It is important to think what you are starting with and what you finally want to achieve.
